Record-Breaking Heatwaves Sweep Europe
Europe is facing a very strong heatwave, with temperatures much hotter than usual in many countries. In places like Spain, Italy and Greece the heat has gone above 45°C (113°F) which is extremely hot. France and Germany are also seeing record-high temperatures.
Because of the heat wildfires have started in forests near the Mediterranean Sea. Some people have had to leave their homes to stay safe. Hospitals are getting more patients with heat related illnesses especially older people and those who are already sick. Officials are telling everyone to stay inside during the hottest hours and to drink a lot of water.
The heat is also causing big problems for travel. Train tracks are bending and airport runways are getting too hot to use. Farmers are having trouble growing crops which might lead to less food and higher prices in stores. Weather experts say that these kinds of heatwaves are becoming more common because of climate change. The World Meteorological Organization says this may be one of the hottest heatwaves Europe has ever seen.
Governments are meeting to make plans to deal with future weather problems. Many people are asking leaders to take strong action to protect the planet. Environmental groups are also asking for cleaner energy and less pollution.
As the heatwave continues it reminds us all that climate change is real and we need to act fast to protect our future.
