Pope Leo XIV Leads First Mass in St. Peter’s Square
Pope Leo XIV leads his first Mass as the new pope in St. Peter’s Square. It was a very special day for the Catholic Church. Thousands of people including world leaders came to see the event. The outdoor Mass began his time as pope and shared a message of hope, kindness and coming together.
When Pope Leo XIV walked onto the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica the crowd cheered loudly. He wore a white robe and a gold trimmed hat. He smiled and raised his hand to bless the people. In his speech the Pope talked about being kind, peaceful and helping others. He said, “Let us open our hearts to everyone—not just our friends and family but to all people no matter where they come from or what they believe.”
Choirs from different countries sang songs in Latin, Italian and other languages. Many people around the world watched the Mass on TV or online. It was translated into more than 30 languages. The mood was happy but also quiet and respectful. Some people were so touched by the moment that they cried. Leaders from many countries and religions came to show support and to pray for peace.
